UCC30xx Controllers

Assembled version of UCC3005 on the left, and the UCC3005USB on the right.
The UCC30xx series of controller boards are complete Unipolar dual stepper motor controller systems. They include the capability of driving one or two unipolar stepper motors at high speeds using current control techniques. These units are a good choice for those designing products which require higher motor speeds, since they can easily "over-voltage" the motor (to attain the higher speed) without overloading it.
These products require that you select a power supply whose voltage and current can handle your stepper motor. You will first want to review the calculating motor current for current controlled products faq in order to determine the current and voltage requirements for your motor.
Each board has a specific range of currents which it can control, as follows:
- UCC3005: This operates motors from 0.1 to 0.5 amps/winding. It requires no heat sinks or special cooling for operation.
- UCC3015: This operates motors from 0.3 to 1.5 amps/winding. It includes heat sinks in the price, and only requires external cooling if 1.5 amp motors are being operated in "double winding mode" at full power (mode "2o" in the firmware).
- UCC3030: This operates motors from 0.6 to 3.0 amps/winding. It includes heat sinks and fans, and requires no other special cooling (other than air flow for the fans).
All of the boards are available both as RS232 based and as USB based. The USB versions also add ESD protection, as well as the optional capability of having the logic portion of the boards (NOT the motors!) be powered off of the USB connection.
Common Firmware Options of the UCC30xx series of Motor Controller Boards
Normally, these boards are configured with the UCDualStepper firmware. This option allows the motors to operated fully independently of each other, as documented here.
Additionally, these boards may be configured with the UCPotStepper firmware. This option allows the motors to operated fully independently of each other, and adds the capability of optionally using a potentiometer to control motor speeds as documented here.
Finally, these boards may be configured to operate in an NC (numerically controlled) process environment, through use of the UCNCStepper firmware option. This firmware tightly links the two motors together, providing for easy "exact straight line" and simplified arc/circle drawing. Please click here for more information about the UCNCStepper firmware.
